No local echo in Putty unless forced
Not good, you must see "local echo" with RX and TX connected.

Check if you can see "local echo" without the voltage divider.
If yes the chip detects +5V as high, not 3,3V.
    Some random kernel coder
Lots of stuff attached to serial console

Damn that was easy! Guess I was over cautious. Read all the instructions saying to ensure only 3.3 and never thought to just try 5v!! Thanks Was about to buy a Readynas duo so you've saved me some pennies and the headache of recovering/transferring files to a new box. Out of curiousity (and a little off topic) can I install your firmware and keep my partitions?

        No, this is good ;-)
Keep the divider for Adapter-Tx --> NAS-Rx so that the NAS only receives 3.3V max.
As the NAS only sends with 3.3V this can be connected directly.

Actually, the whole process went ok using 5v from the USB adaptor, only problem was a few network timeouts when I was uploading the firmware.

            Hello,

I also have bricked NAS4220 box. Among all information in this thread, I'm not able to set up correct procedure
            A few questions:
            1. Will this adapter be usable http://allegro.pl/konwerter-usb-rs23...100383763.html ? (Looking at older posts in this thread... I assue: yes, it will)
            2. Where do I get lateset firmware/kernel/ramdisk/hdapp images ? Unbrick guide does not mention that.
            3. and... from post #21 where pin connections are shows... are these 10 sticking out of PCB pins the same as on this picture ?

            Thx in advance.
            b.

              Hi,
good questions --> easy being answered by me ...

              1. looks good - there shall be a FT232R chip on it. This will work for JTAG nas_flashtool in case your bootloader needs to be flashed.
              2. the images are inside the firmware upgrade packages (unzip and un-tar it)
              3. yes, the left one J2 is for the serial console and J1 (20pin not assembled) for JTAG access

Note: be sure to set the adapter to 3.3V operation!

                Hi,

Thx for information... I've finally put my hands on that usb adapter. And I managed to connect it all... and it's working. Strange thing is, I did not plug cable to pin 10 (Vcc). I assume this is because I use original NAS power adapter.

Anyway... I got menu... and what's next ?
Shall I go according to this guide: http://en.nas-4220.org/index.php/Unbricking_guide and upgrade in below order:
                1. Kernel
                2. Ram disk
                3. Application
                ?

                BR
                b.

                  Yes.
But you need to install a TFTP-Server for uploading the files.
They are some freeware servers you can use. Copy the three files in any location and point the TFTP-Serverdir to this location.

Hi everyone and happy new year !

I'm unburying this topic because I just bricked a IB4220 NAS and unfortunately, the page http://en.nas-4220.org/index.php/Unbricking_guide is dead.
I don't have a cable, instead I was planning to use a Raspberry PI to connect to the NAS. Is there anyone who could explain how I could unbrick the device ?

                      Thank you very much,
                      Jean-François

                        Happy new year!
I guess I found the unbricking guide using the forum's search functiobn here: http://wiki.nas-portal.org/index.php/Unbricking_guide
You will need any adapter/hardware which is 3.3V voltage level to access the serial port.

Please don't continue a discussion inside this thread. Start a new one instead.

                          Anyway you are crazy.
You can't use the TTL serial console on the Rasp without some blackmagic tricks
